Since January 2023, we have been able to realize water projects at eight schools.

We are happy to inform you that all work is ready to start next week, the first phase of the project is to provide clean water for schools (with special water filters for metal removal), which is one of our major projects.

Are these projects important for the children in these areas?

Yes very helpful.

Why???

Districts like Ampara, Moneragala, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, which are far away from the capital of Sri Lanka, are the poorest rural districts with large agricultural areas. Due to the chemical fertilizers and oils used in agriculture and the acidity of the soil in these areas, the water in this area contains many toxins, including heavy metals. Although it is not advisable to drink this water directly, the people living here have no choice but to drink this water as there is no other water on the ground and they cannot get water filters to remove heavy metals.

It is unfortunate that students in schools in these rural areas also drink this dirty water. Many of the schools in these areas are underdeveloped, making it difficult for students to even find this water. Some schools have access to water from wells or community water projects, and the water is consumed without any treatment. There are also no facilities to collect water for other schools. Students at those schools bring water from home when they come to school. Many school children have fallen victim to various diseases by drinking this dirty water. Among them are kidney disease, dental disease, eye disease and stone deposits. Many schools suffer from various water problems.

Your help with this is greatly appreciated.

We measure our success by the number of children and family we have actually been able to give a chance. These stories show that it really is possible to bring about lasting change by joining forces.

School water project

Lack of drinking water in schools is also a major problem and it is absolutely necessary

tackling it. Most of the schools in the rural villages in Ampara district do not have access to drinking water and one of them is Am/Maha/Komana Vidyalaya. This college is located in Padiyathalawa Divisional Secretariat. This area is one

undeveloped Divisional Secretariat in Ampara District and is located at a distance of more than 100 km from Ampara town. This divisional secretariat has a large number of protected forests. Also the development of public works such as electricity, water, roads and canals in this area are at a very low level and the economic level of the people is at a very low level. Therefore, Am/Maha/Komana Vidyalaya, one of the leading schools in Padiyathalawa area with 351 students, also has its fair share of shortcomings. The students of Komana University were in trouble due to the lack of drinking water in the area. The college has no permanent water source and the temporary water supply is too shallow for drinking. Water is brought and filled into a tank at the bottom, from which some children draw water while other children collect water from their homes. There is a small plumbing system near the college that allows water to pass through to reach the college. But this water is also bitter. That's why the health department has pointed out that these students are unable to drink water no matter how they get it. But the students of that college have no choice but to get water from here too

there is no other place to get water. Prolonged consumption of this water can also lead to various diseases in students.

Women and Child rights

People living in extreme poverty in such an undeveloped area have no opportunity to think about anything other than how to live on a daily basis. Therefore, it is common that these people are subjected to various persecutions by the powers that be and face various problems because of their ignorance. The main reason for this is their poverty and ignorance of their human rights. Women and children are the most affected. There are many factors that contributed to this and the next

are some of the most important.

 Having a large number of low-income families with no fixed income.

 There are many female headed families (due to widowhood) and the different

economic problems they face.

 Children and women in particular are not aware of their basic rights.

 Getting married at a young age.
